did about 100,000 people in the us die of opioid overdoses last year?
“100,000 people died of, you know, opiate overdoses or something last year.”

first, the part that holds
the 100,000 figure is real: cdc's final counts show more than 100,000 us drug overdose deaths in each of 2021, 2022 and 2023 (106,699, 107,941 and 105,007), and opioids were involved in roughly three out of four of them.
what we found when we went and looked
we went to cdc's national center for health statistics. "last year", from a september 2026 recording, is 2025, and cdc's provisional estimate for 2025 is 44,564 opioid-involved overdose deaths out of 69,973 drug overdose deaths of all kinds, so the stated figure is more than double the opioid count and above even the all-drug total. opioid-involved deaths have never reached 100,000 in any single year in cdc's data. the final-data peak was 81,806 in 2022. the 100,000 number matches total drug overdose deaths in 2021–2023, all drugs combined, which is a different and larger category than opioids. deaths have fallen for three years running, so the figure is both attached to the wrong category and about three years out of date.
assertion by assertion
| assertion | verdict | what the record says |
|---|---|---|
| about 100,000 people in the us died of opioid overdoses "last year" (2025, given a september 2026 recording) | false | cdc provisional estimates for 2025: 44,564 opioid-involved overdose deaths and 69,973 drug overdose deaths of all kinds. the claimed figure is about 2.2 times the opioid count and about 1.4 times the all-drug total. the 2025 figures are provisional, predicted counts and may be revised as records come in, but revisions of this size have not happened before (the 2024 opioid estimate moved from 54,743 to 55,296 between releases). [2][5] |
| about 100,000 opioid overdose deaths occurred in a recent year (any year) | misattributed | 100,000+ is the real total for all drug overdose deaths in 2021 (106,699), 2022 (107,941) and 2023 (105,007), and it is being attached to opioids alone. opioid-involved deaths peaked at 81,806 in 2022 and were 79,358 in 2023. cdc's own summary for 2023 reads "nearly 80,000" opioid deaths out of 105,000 total, about 76%. [1][4] |
| context: opioids account for most us overdose deaths | confirmed | cdc puts opioid involvement at about 76% of overdose deaths in 2023. in the 2025 provisional data it is roughly 64% (44,564 of 69,973). deaths can involve more than one drug, so the categories overlap and do not add up to the total. [2][4] |
| context: the trend since the peak | confirmed | cdc reports overdose deaths fell for a third straight year in 2025. the all-drug total went from 110,037 (2023 provisional; 105,007 final) to 81,313 (2024, latest estimate) to 69,973 (2025 provisional). opioid-involved deaths fell from 55,296 in 2024 to 44,564 in 2025. [2][3] |
both directions
for the speaker: the order of magnitude was right for the recent past. us drug overdose deaths ran above 100,000 a year from 2021 through 2023, and opioids were involved in most of them (about 76% in 2023, per cdc). the speaker hedged with "or something", which can fairly be heard as reaching for the widely reported all-drug total. by any measure, 2025's 44,564 opioid-involved deaths is still a very large number, about 122 a day.
against: the claim names opioids and "last year". on opioids: cdc's count has never reached 100,000 in any year (peak 81,806 in 2022, final data). on "last year": the 2025 provisional estimate is 44,564 opioid-involved deaths and 69,973 all-drug deaths, so 100,000 is wrong even for the broader category. the figure dates from the 2021–2023 peak and leaves out a drop of roughly a third in total overdose deaths and close to half in opioid deaths since then, which cdc describes as the third consecutive annual decline.
what this cannot say
the 2025 numbers are provisional, predicted counts. cdc notes they are incomplete, adjusted for typical reporting delays, and that some states currently have longer-than-usual delays the adjustment may not fully capture, so the final 2025 figures may move. given past revisions, though, they will not move by tens of thousands. "opioid-involved" means an opioid appeared on the death record, often alongside other drugs, so these counts are not deaths caused by opioids alone. a few percent of overdose deaths list no specific drug, which could leave opioid counts slightly low. we also cannot know which year or which category the speaker had in mind. we took "last year" literally (2025) and also checked the most generous reading, any recent year, and neither reaches 100,000 opioid deaths. we did not fetch the final 2024 data file and relied on cdc's provisional press releases for 2024 and 2025.
