how to find a free therapist

the honest answer first: a licensed therapist who costs you nothing, every week, indefinitely, is rare. what is not rare is real support at $0: sliding scales that reach zero, free peer-led groups, training clinics, crisis lines, and free anonymous peer support that is awake at 3am. below is every route, then the same thing narrowed to your city. 🤍

what actually costs $0

  • community mental health centers. federally funded centers set fees on a sliding scale tied to income, and at the bottom of that scale the fee can be zero. find the nearest one at findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov. waits are real; the care is real too.
  • free peer-led support groups. NAMI and DBSA both run structured groups, online and in person, at no cost and with no referral. these are facilitated groups, not drop-in chat.
  • university training clinics. psychology and counseling programs run clinics where supervised graduate students see clients for a few dollars a session, sometimes nothing.
  • crisis lines, always free. the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential, and staffed 24/7. call or text 988. SAMHSA's National Helpline (1-800-662-4357) is free for treatment referrals, year round.
  • free anonymous peer support. that is what veisund is. you post under a handle you pick, by text or video, and people who have been there can answer. free, no paid tier, open at any hour. it is not therapy and it does not pretend to be.
  • the cheapest licensed route. if you specifically need a clinician, Open Path Collective lists therapists at $40-70 a session after a one-time membership fee (checked on openpathcollective.org 2026-09-29). not free, but the shortest distance between you and a licensed person.

the national guide, with who qualifies for each route, what it costs, how to find it and the catch, is free therapy: every real option in the us. the shorter list is in can't afford therapy: 7 free and low-cost options. if you want your own number rather than an average, the therapy cost calculator works it out with no email required. once cost is solved, the next question is which therapist: how to find the right therapist covers what the matching quizzes can and cannot do, the six questions to ask on a consultation call, and when to switch.
