is fluvoxamine fda approved for major depression? no, its u.s. labels list only ocd

verdict: confirmed
the primary source says it, at that magnitude
“Unlike several other SSRIs, it isn't FDA approved for major depression.”

first, the part that holds

the host is right. every current FDA label we read for fluvoxamine, both the immediate-release tablets and the extended-release capsules, lists obsessive compulsive disorder as the only indication. major depressive disorder isn't there.

what we found when we went and looked

we read three FDA-approved fluvoxamine labels. the 2012 tablet label on accessdata.fda.gov (initial U.S. approval 1994) has one indication, section 1.1 obsessive-compulsive disorder. a generic tablet label on DailyMed revised 2/2024 and a generic extended-release capsule label revised 10/2023 also list only OCD. for comparison, the fluoxetine label lists "acute and maintenance treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD)" as its first indication. one detail cuts both ways: the fluvoxamine tablet label pools side-effect data from "controlled trials with adult OCD and depression patients", so the drug was studied in depression, but the FDA approval covers OCD only.

assertion by assertion

assertionverdictwhat the record says
fluvoxamine is not FDA approved for major depressive disorderconfirmedthe tablet label (accessdata.fda.gov, 2012) has one indication, section 1.1 obsessive-compulsive disorder. a generic tablet label (DailyMed, rev. 2/2024) and a generic extended-release capsule label (DailyMed, rev. 10/2023) also list only OCD. none of them lists major depressive disorder. limitation: we read labels, not the full approval history in Drugs@FDA for every application [1][2][3]
several other SSRIs are FDA approved for major depressionconfirmedthe fluoxetine label (2017) lists acute and maintenance treatment of major depressive disorder as its first indication. we read only this one comparator label, so 'several' rests on one fetched example plus the general picture of the class [4]
fluvoxamine was studied in depression even though it is not approved for itconfirmedthe adverse reactions summary on the tablet label describes the most common reactions 'in controlled trials with adult OCD and depression patients'. the label doesn't report depression efficacy results, and the indication stayed limited to OCD [1]
fluvoxamine's pediatric approval is limited to OCDconfirmedthe boxed warning says the tablets 'are not approved for use in pediatric patients except for patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)'. the capsule label says safety and effectiveness outside pediatric OCD have not been established [1][3]

both directions

for the speaker: all three fluvoxamine labels we read, covering both tablets and extended-release capsules and spanning 2012 to 2024, list OCD as the only indication. the fluoxetine label lists major depressive disorder first among its indications, which supports the "unlike several other SSRIs" framing.

against: there's nothing in the FDA record against the claim itself. two things are easy to misread, though. first, the tablet label's boxed warning talks about suicidality in "short-term studies of major depressive disorder (MDD)". that is class-wide antidepressant language, not an approval for depression. second, the label says fluvoxamine was given to depression patients in controlled trials. so "not approved" is a regulatory status. it doesn't mean the drug was never tested in depression, and the labels don't say it failed.

what this cannot say

a label tells you what the FDA approved. it doesn't tell you whether a drug works for an unlisted condition, and doctors can legally prescribe approved drugs off-label. this check is about the U.S. only. we didn't read regulatory records outside the U.S., where fluvoxamine's approved uses may be different, so the claim shouldn't be taken as true worldwide. we read three fluvoxamine labels and one comparator label, not the full approval history in Drugs@FDA or every other SSRI's label.
