The first thing the FDA requires on a clonazepam label is not about clonazepam alone. It is about what it is taken with.
Significant findings
KLONOPIN prescribing information (H2-Pharma, December 2025), boxed warning: "Concomitant use of benzodiazepines and opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. Reserve concomitant prescribing of these drugs for patients for whom alternative treatment options are inadequate."
Then the sentence that reaches past prescriptions: "The use of benzodiazepines, including Klonopin, exposes users to risks of abuse, misuse, and addiction, which can lead to overdose or death. Abuse and misuse of benzodiazepines commonly involve concomitant use of other medications, alcohol, and/or illicit substances, which is associated with an increased frequency of serious adverse outcomes."
The Warnings section gives the evidence and the instruction: "Observational studies have demonstrated that concomitant use of opioid analgesics and benzodiazepines increases the risk of drug-related mortality compared to use of opioids alone. If a decision is made to prescribe Klonopin concomitantly with opioids, prescribe the lowest effective dosages and minimum durations of concomitant use, and follow patients closely for signs and symptoms of respiratory depression and sedation."
The word "illicit" on a label matters because street opioids now mean fentanyl, which is stronger and less predictable than anything a prescriber measures out. A benzodiazepine on board removes the margin.
Worth asking
If you take clonazepam or any benzodiazepine, the honest question is not whether a drink or a pill is "okay" but which combinations the label says kill: opioids of any kind, including counterfeit pills, and alcohol. If you are going to use, the label's own logic is the harm reduction: lowest dose, not alone, naloxone within reach. Never stop a benzodiazepine abruptly; the same label warns that withdrawal can be life threatening.
