Free online therapy chat: what's actually free, and what's anonymous
updated september 29, 2026
the short answer
- free, ongoing chat with a licensed therapist is rare. most “free therapy chat” offers are trials or discounts on a paid plan.
- what is genuinely free by chat: crisis lines (for when you are in danger) and peer support (people, not clinicians).
- what is anonymous: peer support under a handle. therapy almost never is, because a therapist and a billing system need to know who you are.
- low-cost real therapy exists, mostly through community clinics, training clinics and sliding-scale directories. the national free-therapy guide lists every route.
if you are in danger right now, skip this page and go to the crisis resources. a chat app or a directory is the wrong tool for that moment.
why “free therapy chat” is mostly a paid trial
search for free online therapy chat and most results are paid platforms. the usual pattern: a free signup, an intake questionnaire, then a weekly or monthly plan. some offer a first week free with a card on file, or financial aid that lowers the price without making it free. none of that is a scam by itself, but it is not what the search promised. we go through what each option really costs, with sources, in what's actually free in online mental-health care.
what is genuinely free by chat
crisis lines. free, and many take text or chat as well as calls. they are for emergencies and acute distress, not for ongoing therapy, and they may point you elsewhere if you are not in crisis. the options are on our crisis page.
peer support. free communities where people who have been through something similar can answer to you. peer support is not therapy and nobody replying is your clinician. it helps most when what you need is to be heard, and least when you need a diagnosis, medication or a treatment plan. peer support vs therapy covers where the line sits.
self-guided apps. some mental-health apps have free tiers with exercises or journaling. a chatbot is not a therapist, and no AI therapy chatbot has FDA authorization; here is what FDA has and has not reviewed.
anonymous therapy chat: what “anonymous” can honestly mean
a licensed therapist has to know who you are, for safety and for their license, and a paid platform needs your billing details. so “anonymous therapy” is close to a contradiction. what can be anonymous is peer support: you pick a handle and share what is going on without your name. even then, most apps are pseudonymous rather than fully anonymous, because an account needs an email or phone number behind it. what “anonymous” really means in mental health chat walks through how to tell the difference.
if you want real therapy at low cost
the routes that most often lead to an actual therapist without full fees are community mental health centers, university training clinics, and directories that list sliding-scale or reduced-rate therapists. our national guide, free therapy: every real option in the US, goes through each route and who qualifies. sites like Psychology Today compares the directories, including which ones show in-network and low-cost options. can't afford therapy? has more places to start.
how to tell a real free option from a trial
- it asks for a card before you get anything. that is a trial that converts.
- the free part is an assessment. the assessment is the sales step.
- “free with insurance” means your insurer pays. without insurance it is not free.
- you can journal for free, but talking to a person costs money. that is a freemium app.
questions
Is there free online therapy chat with a licensed therapist?
Rarely, and almost never ongoing. Most "free therapy chat" offers from paid platforms are a trial, an intake assessment or a discount that still costs money. Real therapy at low or no cost usually comes through community mental health centers, university training clinics or sliding-scale directories, and most of those are video or in person, not chat.
Is there anonymous therapy chat for free?
Anonymous and therapy rarely go together: a licensed therapist needs to know who you are, and a paid platform needs billing details. What you can get free and under a handle is peer support, where people who are not clinicians reply to what you share. Crisis lines also offer free chat when you are in danger.
Is veisund free online therapy?
No. veisund is free anonymous peer support: you post under a handle, as text or a short video, and other people can answer on their own time. It is not therapy, not crisis care, and the community is still small.
What if I need help right now?
If you are in danger or thinking about ending your life, use a crisis line, not a chat app or a directory. The veisund crisis page lists the options.
