this page is part of veisund (formerly Resolv Social), a free, anonymous peer-support community with a sourced library on psychiatric medications.
The best free alternative to 7 Cups depends on what you used it for. For free, pseudonymous peer support with nothing to upgrade to, veisund (formerly Resolv Social, ours) lets you post under a handle, and people who have been through something similar can answer, but it is not live chat and its community is small. For a big free feed, TalkLife (16+). For one-to-one peer matching with no fee, WhiteFlag (US, 18+). For pre-moderated support for ages 11 to 25, Tellmi (UK-based). HearMe, often listed as free, is a $7.99-a-month subscription. 7 Cups itself still has a free plan, rationed by daily chat requests, and now includes an AI chatbot. In a crisis, none of these is the tool: call or text 988.
7 Cups of Tea was one of the first platforms to offer free emotional support online. It offers chat with trained volunteer listeners and anonymous chat rooms. If you used it years ago, the main thing that has changed is the pricing, set out below.
It is still running, and the free listener chat still exists, but it now sits inside a tiered model. On its own upgrade page (checked 2026-10-11), the free plan comes with a limited number of daily chat requests, the Sharing Circle, a limited number of chats a month with Noni (its AI chatbot) and basic growth paths. Premium, at $7.99 a month billed yearly ($95.88) or $12.99 month to month, gives four times as many chat requests, daily Noni access, 35+ premium growth paths and no ads. Licensed-therapist plans cost $159 a month for weekday messaging and $299 a month for a weekly 45-minute live audio or video session.
None of that is a scam, and the free layer is real. But if you came to 7 Cups because you have nothing to spend, it helps to know where the limits are before you rely on it.
If you're looking for something that captures what 7 Cups used to be — genuine human connection without the paywall — here's what matters:
Every fact in this table comes from the service's own website, terms or app-store listing, read on 2026-10-11. “People or AI” is about who answers you, not whether a company uses software to moderate or match (most do, and we say where).
| service | free? | to sign up | who answers | age | format |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| veisund (formerly Resolv Social) | yes. no premium tier, no ads | an email (never shown) and a handle you choose | people. one automated exception: a crisis-resources response if a post suggests immediate risk | 18+ | post text or a short video, people can answer on their own time; iOS, Android |
| TalkLife | yes. an optional "TalkLife Hero" subscription at $2.99 a month adds cosmetic perks | email, username, password; per-post anonymous toggle | people. software flags harmful content, a human safety team reviews it "typically within 30 seconds" | 16+ | public feed of posts and comments, direct messages; iOS, Android, web |
| Tellmi | yes (the app lists no in-app purchases; the company sells to NHS commissioners) | month and year of birth, for age banding; anonymous | people. every post is checked by a trained human moderator before it goes live; "there are no AI bots" per its App Store listing | designed for 11 to 25; adults see only adults | pre-moderated anonymous posts and replies; iOS, Android, web |
| WhiteFlag | yes. its FAQ: "free for users, and it always will be" | username, phone number and password; others see a display name only | people. "Who can provide support on WhiteFlag? Anyone." no AI statement | 18+, US only | one-to-one peer messaging, matched on shared experiences; iOS, Android |
| Wisdo (a Talkspace company) | yes for the consumer app (no in-app purchases listed); sells to health plans | the App Store listing says "Join Anonymously" | people, matched by what Talkspace calls AI-powered precision matching; a safety team moderates | 18+ | moderated communities and group coaching; iOS, Android |
| 7 Cups (the free plan) | the free plan is $0 with a limited number of daily chat requests and a limited number of Noni chats a month | an account; "all contact information… blocked from being shared" | people (volunteer listeners who completed an online course) and Noni, an in-house AI chatbot | 13+, with a separate teen community | one-to-one text chat, group rooms, AI chat; iOS, Android, web |
| Reddit and Discord communities | yes | a username; Reddit is public | people, moderated by volunteers; no vetting of servers or members | platform minimums (13+); communities set their own | public threads (Reddit); text and voice rooms (Discord); web, iOS, Android |
| 988 Lifeline and Crisis Text Line | yes | none | trained crisis counsellors (988) and trained volunteer crisis counsellors (Crisis Text Line) | anyone | call or text 988, chat at 988lifeline.org; text HOME to 741741 |
Both directions, as always. 7 Cups is the better tool if you want a live one-to-one chat with a trained listener right now: veisund is posts and replies, nobody is waiting on the other end, and TalkLife and Wisdo are communities rather than a queue. It is the only service on this page with a community for 13 to 17 year olds run with extra listener checks. Its FAQ claims listeners in 140 languages, which none of the others can match. And if you want an AI companion alongside people, Noni is built in. The trade: the free tier is rationed by daily chat requests, and the product's business model is the upgrade.
The therapist shortage isn't getting better. Wait times for affordable mental health care stretch months in most cities. Insurance coverage remains patchy. And even when you can see someone, a 50-minute session once every two weeks doesn't cover the 3am moments when everything feels impossible.
Research shows that peer support — talking to someone who's experienced what you're going through — meaningfully reduces depressive symptoms in the trials that have tested it properly. It is not established as equivalent to professional support, and we are not going to claim it is. It's not a replacement for therapy when therapy is needed, but it fills a gap that the mental health system has left wide open.
It depends on what you used 7 Cups for. For anonymous peer support from real people with no paid tier at all, veisund (formerly Resolv Social) is the closest match: you post under a handle, real people can answer, and nothing is locked behind a subscription. For large public communities, the mental-health subreddits are free but public and threaded rather than private. Discord servers can be excellent or dead, and you have to find a good one. For a crisis, none of these are the tool — text HOME to 741741 or call or text 988.
Partly. 7 Cups is still operating, and its own upgrade page (checked 2026-10-11) lists a free plan at $0 with a limited number of daily one-to-one chat requests with volunteer listeners, the Sharing Circle group, and a limited number of chats a month with Noni, its AI chatbot. Paid plans add more: premium at $7.99 a month billed yearly ($95.88) or $12.99 month to month, therapist messaging at $159 a month, and a weekly live audio or video therapy session at $299 a month.
Yes, and it says so. Its home page introduces Noni as "your AI counsellor", the free plan includes a limited number of Noni chats a month and premium adds daily Noni access, and its listener FAQ describes a tool that lets volunteer listeners press a button to generate a response when they are stuck. The one-to-one listener chats are still with people. If you want a service that uses no AI in the conversation, Tellmi says on its App Store listing that it has no AI bots, WhiteFlag makes no AI claim at all, and veisund says replies are from real people, with one named exception: an automated safety response that surfaces crisis resources when a post suggests immediate risk.
For one-to-one chat with a trained peer listener, HearMe is the closest in shape, but it is a paid subscription ($7.99 a month or $69.99 a year after a seven-day trial, read 2026-10-11). For free, moderated communities where you post and real people can answer, TalkLife (16+), Wisdo (18+, now owned by Talkspace) and veisund (18+) are the closest. For anonymous one-to-one peer matching with no fee, WhiteFlag (US, 18+) is the nearest free match.
7 Cups itself accepts users from 13 and runs a teen community with extra listener checks. Tellmi, a UK social enterprise commissioned by parts of the NHS, is designed for ages 11 to 25 and shows under-18s only posts from people within two years of their age, with every post checked by a human moderator before it goes live. TalkLife is 16+. veisund, WhiteFlag, Wisdo and HearMe are 18+.
Really free. There is no premium tier, no locked features, and no upsell to paid counseling. The one thing an account needs is an email address, which makes it pseudonymous rather than strictly anonymous — the people you talk to see only your handle.
No, and this page does not claim it is. In the trials that have tested it properly, peer support meaningfully reduces depressive symptoms, but it is not established as equivalent to professional care. It fills the gap between sessions and the gap for people who cannot get a session at all.
If 7 Cups helped you at some point, that's great. If it's not working for you anymore, or the free plan's limits don't fit how you need support, you have options. On 7 Cups, listeners are volunteers, and we can't verify their training standards or how consistent they are.
Download veisund and try something different. Free peer support from real people. Post whenever you need to. No strings, no subscriptions, no catch.
