I was recently let go from a job that I really wanted after a week due to company not having money. Last week a job was rescinded through no fault of my own. Feeling like whenever I want or get something that I want, it’s taken away. I am college educated with many years of professional experience. Wondering how many more let downs I can take

Very sorry to hear that. I’ve recently been occupied by this idea of how humans desire familiarity would you say that throughout your life the prevailing feeling has been struggle? Like does hardship dominate your existence, such that you would be more familiar with it?

For the past decade or so it’s been pretty much struggle. Not with working until recently but other things. It is familiar but I would not say it’s my desire to struggle

For sure. Nobody desires struggle. We all desire largely the same things, success, connectedness, meaning, etc. but desire is one thing, familiarity is really what we are attracted to ultimately. It’s what we are most comfortable with. And so subconscious or consciously I think we are attracted to familiarity. Even if familiarity is destructive. In a sense we are addicted to what we are most familiar with.

I think that explains why change is so hard. We are attracted to what’s familiar so newness is hard to establish. Newness in either direction positive or negative. It speaks to how much of a product of our environment we are and how we seek out those types of environments or mental, physical states.

What do you think of that idea?

I see where you are coming from now and I do like the idea.

I don’t want to be like my dad but in so many ways I feel I’m turning into him so it’s like I’m more familiar with it and becoming it. I think we have to work really hard at creating a life we are unfamiliar with and seek out that in ways that are difficult to explain
