I have a chance to improve my grades at the expense of my teammate's grade, this guy did practically nothing for the entire project but I am struggling with ethics and whether I should do it or not, can you give me any advice? ? I have to decide this Friday

How come you could improve your grades? Is there like a form where you rate your teammates performance? How would you be telling your teacher about his lack of performance?

There's a written coevaluation, if he loses points, i would earn them.

I don't see any reason to not be honest.

I feel bad about him, I kinda think he didn't work because he can't (I don't want to call him dumb), and I really think taking points from him could really get him in trouble, on the other side, I did pretty much the whole project, I'm really confused about what I should do

Its ok to feel that empathy for him and it's ok to say that he offered some points. Give him credit where it is deserved and be honest about each of your contribution. Just state the facts, don't let your frustration or sympathy for him impact your feedback.

He just told us he is getting an endoscopy next week, I don't feel capable to do that to him now

Hi Op, I agree with Blue Lamb.. If he is struggling, it should show in his grades, otherwise he may not get help with whatever the issue is. If he needs support with his studies, he is not likely to get it, unless it shows that he needs it. Does your school have a support system he could benefit from if his grades show that he needs it?

My point here being that you wouldn't just be honest for your own sake, but for his as well.

I don't think I can do it, not after what a learnes today

Hum. Not fun to have health problems. But really, someone else's health problems should inhibit your performance. You can even mention that he has health problems so don't want to be hard on him in your response. But I don't think you need to unnecessarily shoulder his burden

I mean, it doesn't really inhibit my performance, it's just that it could enhance it. I really appreciate your help, but I think I won't do it. Thank you so much

Totally up to you! Thanks for asking.
