a free alternative to Calm, for when you need people more than a sleep story

last updated september 29, 2026

Calm is a subscription app for sleep, meditation and relaxation: 500+ Sleep Stories, guided meditations, breathing exercises, music. it's good at what it does. what it doesn't do is put you in touch with other people. veisund is the opposite shape: no audio library at all, just a free place to post what's going on under a handle and get replies from people who've lived something similar. this page is about which one fits the problem you actually have.

the facts, from Calm's own pages

Calm's FAQ says a subscription "unlocks our full library of meditations, Sleep Stories, music, and other features," including 500+ Sleep Stories with new ones added weekly. its homepage offers a free trial. the regular price isn't printed on the public pages we read; it appears when you sign up, so we don't quote one. Calm's terms set the minimum age at 16 and say that if you're under the age of majority you need a parent or guardian to agree to the terms. Calm Health, a separate product, has its own site with a sign-in for individuals and a page for organizations. checked on 2026-09-29 against each company's own site.

what Calm says it isn't

Calm's terms are unusually plain about this: the services "are not intended, designed, or implied to diagnose, prevent, or treat any condition or disease," Calm "is not a licensed medical care provider," and it "does not provide emergency services." veisund would write the same sentences about itself. neither app is therapy and neither is a crisis line. if you're in danger, call or text 988, or text HOME to 741741.

when Calm is the better choice

if the problem is sleep, Calm is the better tool. a Sleep Story at 1am does something a peer community can't. if you want to learn to meditate with a structured course like 7 Days of Calm, or you want a breathing exercise that works in 60 seconds during a panic spike, Calm has built exactly that. it also runs on more devices, including your watch and TV. and Calm's minimum age is 16; veisund's is 18, so a 16- or 17-year-old can use Calm (with a parent or guardian's agreement where they're under the age of majority) and can't use veisund.

what veisund does differently

veisund is for the kind of night where the problem isn't falling asleep, it's the thing you can't say to anyone you know. you post under a handle you choose, with no real name and no phone number, and other members reply when they read it. it's not live chat and nobody is waiting on the other end; the community is still small, so replies can take time. posts can be marked resolved, crediting the reply that helped. the web library adds plain-language study summaries with evidence grades, which matters if you've ever wondered what the research on meditation apps actually shows.
