What do you do when you lose hope? Like when you feel like a ship is sailing out into the abyss and there is nothing you can do

Are you worried you are going the wrong direction? Or that it’s pointless overall?

  • the person who asked

Maybe I'm not going a direction at all. And maybe it's pointless to go anywhere at all

Does this make you sad? If it were to be pointless?

  • the person who asked

Maybe. I always thought you should do something with your life. Like there is something that makes you happy or is the answer yo the questions and struggle. Otherwise it's all just bogus and why try

If there isn’t a point, is that a reason not to try?

  • someone who replied, again

Even if there isn’t a point wouldn’t you want to live your fullest life possible? However that looked? Not relative to anyone else’s life which I know is hard not to compare

    Still there?

I have experienced this feeling a lot in life. It drove me into addiction and despair. A lot of people have this experience and to my knowledge there’s not a clear path out of this thinking. Some people use religions or purpose, but I found giving up the idea that everything I do has to have some bigger meaning and purpose to be incredibly freeing. I spent a few years learning how to just be. Just being on the ship being enough.

There is something in nihilism that some call the valley of the abyss. It’s when one loses faith in what was once their guiding light but haven’t figured out what makes anything worth it for them after that. It takes time for something else to come up that means a lot to you. In the meantime, experimenting with some practices of presence and gratitude can make things feel more bearable & full.. even if they feel aimless.

Feeling hopeless is an emotion I’m very familiar with. I’d do anything to feel a spark of hope or faith in something but I’m no longer capable of feeling much of anything. The way I feel I know I’ll never ask for help again it’s not fair to my family cause I don’t want to help myself
