relationships & contentment

Im so emotionally drained so often from being my mother's therapist figure. I will soon be off to college and I worry I will fulfill this role over text despite the distance when I wish to move on with my life. I worry that if she stays like this it will affect my relationship. In the past, she wasn't very responsive to the therapist she worked with prior. They gave up on her, says my dad. My entire family has been affected. I need help.

All I can say here is based on personal experience, so take it with a pinch of salt: I found myself in a similar position to yours. It took time, but distance did help. I still have this therapeutic role, but the amount of time I spend performing it is considerably reduced. Not gonna lie, it's still tough. But it isn't as harmful for me as it used to be, because it doesn't take over my whole life anymore.

My mistake however was to believe I could just get over it until such a time that I would be able to live away from my mum. I should have gotten help then. If it is avaible to you, reaching out to a therapist for yourself could help you better navigate the current situation. It is important that you take care of yourself.

Would this be a possible for you?

How are you at setting boundaries? Ever said something like ‘I’m not comfortable talking about this with you’ to start drawing appropriate and inappropriate conversation boundaries?
